Fight the job interview frump and 'Glazed donut' makeup

Here is a list compiled by the Associated Press on interviewing fashion tips, do’s and don’ts for guys.

— Suit or no suit?
Suits and ties are acceptable for most interviews, but slacks and blazers are fine too. A tie? It depends on the office culture. With the exception of gigs where you are expected to radiate hip, a tie is a safe bet.

— Can a guy be too conservative?
Yes. A young guy interviewing for a job as a member of a technology sales team, for example, might want to reconsider the pinstriped suit, the French cuffs, the Rolex, and the expensive English wingtips.
You can be too distracting while channeling your inner Don Draper.
A get-up like something seen on “Mad Men” might cause employers to think the candidate will be looking for too large of a salary.

— Details matter
Press that shirt. Make sure the shoes look like they have seen polish in the past year. And, please see a barber and shave.

Now, a list by me for ladies looking for a new gig:

— Fight the frump
Just like guys, your first impression is everything. Make sure your dress, skirt or pantsuit is crisp and pressed.

— Wear it well
If it’s too tight or you fill like a stuffed sausage in your “interview” suit you bought a decade ago, it’s time to go shopping.

— Don’t overpower
Red has always been a forbidden color for interview attire. Add to that list perfume. A lot more people then you would think are sensitive to smells. Don’t risk blowing a job interview because you just can’t stand to leave home without Giorgio Armani.

— Make-up control
There is something I like to call the “glazed donut” face. Essentially, it’s a woman who cakes on the makeup. In short, don’t do that when interviewing!
You have the weekend to smear on the base and blacken your eyes with dark eye shadow.
Think minimal when heading to a job interview, unless you are being considered for a theatrical production or plan to dance provocatively near a pole.

Flaunt that sexy beach body

My friend "Roxanne" has a problem with my bathing suit. She says it's too "sporty." I say it's great for moving around at the beach and for hiding problem areas, i.e. my thighs.

She is pushing me to get a new "sexier" suit. So, I am considering.

Here is a great suit for gals like me who are a bit apprehensive to bare it all. This one-piece conceals the tummy area and the keyhole top adds a splash of sex. Best part of all, the busy swirl pattern keeps the eye moving and off problem areas.

That's a Howl of an ugly shirt

Debbie Rowe, Michael Jackson’s ex wife, made a number of headlines this week.

Undoubtedly, most media outlets turned their attention to her after she announced plans to seek custody of Jackson’s two eldest children, Paris and Prince.

Rowe is really of no consequence to me. I only hope the kids end up where they choose to be and where they will be well cared for.

Truth be told, Rowe didn’t really make my radar this week until photos surfaced of her wearing a “Three Wolf Moon” T-shirt while tending a horse in California.

I am by no means a fashionista. And like most of you, I have slum clothes I wear when painting or doing laborious projects around the house. So, I am not judging Rowe’s work clothes, just her taste.

I have seen a number of local ladies as of late sporting wolf T-shirts. I guess I don’t understand the new phenomenon.

Just Google searching the words “Wolf” and “T-shirt” brought up more than 100,000 horrid results.

Did you know you can buy a wolf and Indian princess T-shirt or a tank top bearing the image of a silhouetted angel wolf online?

If you really want to go wild, score a T-shirt print of an oversized wolf head snuggled among the stars as it watches over humans below.

Can anyone say CREEPY?

I have become so fixated lately about wolf shirts that I casually mentioned to one of my co-workers that the wolves seem to be breeding in Southeast Texas, more and more shirts springing to life everyday.

Later, he sent me this text message:
“I just saw a wolf shirt, possible coyote. They must make them in one size, so they cover the kneecaps. Fancy.”

Fancy indeed!

Adult unitards make me GaGa

I loved to rock the unitard when I was a kid. My favorite was this navy crushed velvet number I wore to my jazz dance class. It was so hot!

Literally.

But then something funny happened one day. I TURNED 9 and realized that adults - who weren't CRAZY - did not regularly wear unitards. And if they did, they sure as hell weren't wearing them in public.

Enter Lady GaGa! (And the crazy man at right)

I truthfully enjoy the Queen of the Unitard's hits ( I recommend "Just Dance" and "Poker Face" for the treadmill to get your caboose moving). But the jury is out on her uber unique look. Unless she is going to perform an Olympic floor routine while singing (which would be awesome), I think she should tack on a skirt.

I'm just saying.

Thoughts? I will give the girl this: she has amazing legs!

Check out the images below and form your own opinion.

Time trippin' to 85' and back

I took a most excellent adventure to Parkdale Mall ... ahem, 1985 last night.
Deck shoes, retro Reebok hi-tops and Napolean Dynamite-esqe wrestling shoes are back - much to my HORROR!
Like many of you, I totally rocked the red Reebok hi-tops with slouch socks and T-shirt ties in the late 80s.
So lets take a look back and compare then and now. Party on, dudes:

THEN: It's the Sugarbaker gals! God, I loved Designing Women. Julia (Dixie Carter) was my favorite. She was just the epitome of southern charm and class. Oh, and I am pretty sure Paula Deen channels Charlene when she starts talking all sugary sweet y'all. I keep waiting for her to bust out with Poppler Bluff's Perfect Pie recipe.

NOW: Someone call Delta Burke! Those are shoulder pads Suzanne Sugarbaker wouldn't have even tackled. Although, you could tackle this woman and not even bruise her.

THEN: Molly Ringwald stole our hearts with her quirky fashion sense and good fortune of dating well outside her league. (Come on, you know in the real world Jake Ryan would never have left the hot blonde in Sixteen Candles for Sammy Davis Baker Jr. High school is brutal. )

NOW: Hats off (please!). Unless you dig instantly aging 20 years and warding off the advances of men, sideline the hat ladies.

THEN: Flashdance oozed sex appeal (and sweat) with off-the-shoulder, over sized sweatshirt.

NOW: The off-the-shoulder T-shirt is back! And I gotta say, it's hot. Careful though. You need a cool and properly fitting undershirt to complete the look. Remember, no one wants to see a dingy old bra! Dress right, girls!

THEN: Oh yeah! That caption says all. It is 'denim to die for.' Or, die to trying to avoid. Check out that bedazzling. They don't make em' like they used to (Thank goodness!).

NOW: Ladies and gents, acid wash denim is back! It comes in cooler cuts and styles these days, but I still stress the importance of denim in moderation. No one needs to wear denim head to toe. NO ONE!

Help! It's a fashion crisis!

"Nothing horrible has happened, but ummm ... I need you to call me back ASAP," was the voice mail that greeted me Saturday afternoon.

Heart pounding, I continued to listen - all the while fearing the caller was going to say, "your house is on fire," or "something has happened to one of my children." Turns out, one of my closest pals was just having a fashion crisis.

The problem boiled down to, Liz (that's what I call her for the purpose of this posting) was going to an evening wedding and hated every dress in her closet. It's a crisis we can all relate to.

She said she really wanted to wear a dress she had worn to a wedding in February, but didn't want anyone to think she only had one good dress to her name.

I've been to a number of weddings. Can't tell you what anyone was wearing at any of those events, except the bride wore white and the groom was in a tux. I told Liz to go ahead and rock her February dress again, adding "no one but you will know."

A Sunday text message confirmed just that.

If you want to wear a dress again and fear someone will notice, try these tips:

1. Grab a wrap. Pashminas and scarves are great little disguising devices that can change your entire look and keep you warm when spring nights turn chilly.

2. Choose new accessorise. The first time you wore the dress you wore long dangly earrings. Next time, choose more demure earrings and don a sparkly necklase. Same goes with changing up your shoes and handbags.

3. Make it a hair do. If you wore your hair down at the first wedding, try a fun up-do for the next or vise versa. Your hair will alter the appearance of the dress' neckline.

Now, go celebrate and be marry! Errr, merry!

Asked and Answered: Defining 'smokin' hot' summer shoes

An anonymous poster posed this question:
"I would like to know what is best for the some heels or sandals for the summer as you said a smoking pair of shoes."

Answer:
Thick straps are everywhere this year, like the picture below suggests.

If you prefer sandals to pumps, think Russell Crowe in Gladiator. If you are a stiletto queen, the higher the better. For those of you in between, let us rejoice that the wedge is still fashionable.

10 tips for dressing 10 pounds lighter

Let's say it in unison: "Oh My God! It's almost bathing suit season!"
Now that we have that out of our system, here are 10 easy steps to dress 10 pounds lighter (You know, while you work on getting that bathing suit bod ready for summer!):

1. Don't go baggy or too tight. Women who attempt to mask their weight with over sized clothes or skin-tight pants only highlight their flaws. Dress your size.

2. Make black your favorite color. Wearing black or navy blue around your "trouble areas" works wonders for hiding excess pounds. Stay away from light acid washed denim or (eh gads!) white jeans.

3. Get a uniform appearance. Try pairing the same color top and bottom with a bright cardigan or scarf to minimize your size. By wearing the same color top and bottom, you actually lengthen your appearance and look leaner.

4.Accessorize properly. Leave the skinny clutch handbag and tiny lockets at home if you are packing excess weight. Tiny accessories can make you appear heavier by drawing the eye to your "trouble areas".

5.Rock the stilettos girls! To make your physique appear slimmer, add some height with a good pair of heels. For women who just need to shed a few pounds, skinny stilettos are appropriate. If you are wanting to lose a lot of weight, try a thicker heel to avoid the appearance that you are putting excess weight on tiny heels.

6. Get a good fit. Avoid stretch pants and stay away from tapered or slim cut jeans. Also, make sure jeans and dress pants come to the top of your shoe. Capris pants should rest just past the thickest part of the calf to lengthen your appearance.

7. Just say no to jersey (the fabric and the state)! If you are hiding a few pounds, avoid all jersey knit dresses and tops. Jersey is quite the unforgiving fabric and will highlight every dimple, bulge and bump.

8. Sit up tall. The best way to knock off the appearance of a bulge or pooched belly is to have good posture. Standing tall, with your head held high will actually lengthen your body and boost confidence.

9. Pick your patterns wisely. Small patterns or extra large patterns are actually your enemy when trying to hide your weight. Both can draw the eye to "trouble areas." Stick to mid-size prints and patterns to accentuate your best flaws.

10. Dress your age. If you don't have the legs of a 20-year-old anymore, let those short skirts go. You don't have to sacrifice your love of good fashion as you age. You just need to find more classic pieces that make you feel young and stylish, and look less like the punch line of a joke.

Keep classy, hide those straps!

I'll be the first to admit that I have made (and continue) to make some fashion faux pas.
But there are a couple of BIG no-no's I live by - one being to wear the appropriate bra with tank tops and halter shirts; another is dressing properly for the occasion.
I saw both of these rules broken this past week ... and by the same woman.
During intermission for Cirque Eloize Nebbia at the Lutcher Theater Wednesday, I spotted a woman coming out of a bathroom stall in blue jeans, a halter top and BIG, black bra straps.
I think everyone should be comfortable and sport their own style, but club dress is not appropriate for the theater.
If heading out for a night of culture, throw on a pair of dress pants or a skirt and your favorite top. For extra comfort, spice up a comfortable dress with a Pashmina and a cute pair of flats.
S&M Family Outlet on Dowlen Road is currently selling Pashminas for $5.99, so you have no excuse not to look fabulous on a budget.
As for the bra issue, pick up a racerback and strapless bra for the summer.
You are bound to show off your arms and back enough this summer to justify the investment. Remember, you want people to notice your sleek arms or sculpted back, not your FRAYING bra strap!
Target has a variety of hot racerback bras starting at $14.99; Victoria's Secret has a large selection of strapless bras starting at $20. But for one-stop support, pick up Victoria's Secret's 100 Multi-Way bra for $50. You can position the flesh-colored straps any way you like for the perfect look.
